Power Grid (1)
HB and HL are back at the game table for a H2H game of Power Grid. We modded the rules slightly because we prefer a shorter game. We started step 2 at 9 cities and ended the game with 18 cities. I think I prefer this house rule because it makes choosing which cities to connect part of the strategy of the game as opposed to knowing that you must connect all 21 cities in order to end the game. Also, it moves the game to the dramatic finale sooner which also means there's more time for more games. Don't get me wrong I don't think the first part of the game is boring, but the end game is when my heart races. One additional change that I think we will make going forward is removing 10 plants instead of 8 at the beginning of the game in order to allow Step 3 to play a bigger role in the game.
Onto the result. No surprises here. Since it was a learning game for HL, it was an easy win for HB. HB took most of the cheaper connections in the east and mid west while HL paid more for the pricier connections in the gulf. In terms of resources, HL also competed with herself for uranium while HB pretty much used everything else. HL also used some of the green energy as well, but couldn't keep up with HB's income. HL also "got tricked" into bidding for plants that HB never really wanted which HB happily gave up. In the end, HB powered 17 cities to HL's 14 on the first turn of Step 3. Not bad for her first try!
